Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Moulin Rouge-La Goulue

The largest exhibition and sale of legendary artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s posters is being shown at New York’s International Poster Center through January 11. The show, Toulouse-Lautrec: 100 Prints and Posters, will present more than 100 of the artist’s works spanning all mediums?oil, print, sculpture, photography, and drawing. Alongside 17 of Toulouse-Lautrec’s commissioned posters is the only known copy of the trial proof for the poster La Clownesse au Moulin Rouge, which the artist tore in half and left on his studio floor. The drawing was taped back together by his assistants and is on public display for the first time in 40 years. The trial proof, with horizontal tears and creases, is expected to sell for $120,000. The collection also includes a number of the artist’s personal effects, most on sale for the first time, including an 1896 holiday greeting card made for cabaret performer May Belfort, the subject of many of Toulouse-Lautrec’s pieces.
