Pricy but tasty!

Overall, we liked this spice blend. However, we just wish it had more bourbon flavor.

On a recent trip to Woodford Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky, we came across the brand’s Bourbon Smoked Chef’s Spice Blend inside their gift shop. Although a bit pricy for a small container, ($11.50 for 2 ounces) we decided to give it a try because (1.) we love the flavor of bourbon and (2.) we’ve been grilling like crazy this summer and are always looking for new spice rubs.

Here’s how we used it: We generously coated both sides of three boneless, skinless chicken breasts. We covered them and put them back in the refrigerator for three hours in order to let the spices really absorb into the meat for maximum flavor. We heated up the grill and when the thermometer reached 400 degrees, we put the chicken on the grill. We let the chicken cook for approximately 8 to 10 minutes on each side.

The chicken was juicy and tasted great. The rub gave the chicken a great chile flavor. The salt and other spices provided a complex taste. The smokey flavor was pleasant and not overpowering. Our one disappointment: There wasn’t a notable bourbon taste. Although the rub itself is very good, it tastes similar to other high quality rubs on the market. We were willing to pay a premium for the Woodford Reserve spice blend in order to get more of a unique bourbon taste. Unfortunately, the spice blend didn’t deliver on this front. We pour two fingers of Woodford Reserve to drink with dinner, so in the end, we were able to get some bourbon flavor with our meal–although it had to come straight from the bottle.
