Good-bye (for now), obnoxious platforms! When it comes to shoes, single-sole has been the rallying cry for the last several seasons. The thinking is that, divested of ankle-endangering elevation, pared-down footwear evokes a more discreet sense of chic. Consider the spirited feathered flats or geometrically printed stiletto sandals of spring: Not a platform among them and they still packed major style punch. Why not strip things back even further with something that–while still classic–is a little more subtle? Call it the non-statement statement shoe. However, this is anything but bland fashion. Take, for example, Manolo Blahnik’s “Volvini” patent leather Mary Jane pumps ($855). The designer hasn’t necessarily made anything new, but rather is bringing back lost or forgotten elegance. Understated is a the fashion of the season and we’re on board.
