Apple is recalling the USB power adapted for its iPhone 3G because of a risk of electric shock, according to the company. Under certain conditions, the metal prongs of the adapter can break off and remain in a power outlet.
“We have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported,” Apple wrote in an advisoryon its Web site. The power adapters were included in every iPHone 3G sold in the United States, United States, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Japan, Mexico, Panama and Peru., according to Apple.
The power adapters sold in the original iPhones are not affected.
On Oct. 10, Apple plans to provide a replacement adapter in exchange for the current one. Users who purchased the adapter as an aftermarket accessory can also exchange it for a new one. Replacement adapters will have a green dot on the bottom to distinguish them from original adapters. Owners of iPhone 3G units can order a replacement via the Web, which will ship within three weeks, or exchange it at an Apple retail store beginning Oct. 10. Users need to include their iPhone 3G’s serial number to receive a replacement.
The Apple iPHone 3G debuted in July and the company claimed it sold one million units worldwide in the first weekend.
